... The people are very friendly, the town and surrounding areas very pretty, with plenty of good shops and restaurants. To sum up in a single word: civilised!

As a foreigner myself, it is nice I am not alone, and plenty of other Europeans have settled (the commute to the City is very fast). I lived in Cobham Surrey before. In many ways the towns are similar, and house prices are similar. If being flash is your thing go there, if a you are looking for a civilised, laid back and place to bring up your kids choose Sevenoaks, I think you will be hard pressed to find a better place so close to London.

... The people are friendly and polite, including the teenagers! The town centre pubs and restaurants are more geared towards the 25+ but that's not a bad thing in the view of this 26 year old.

Word On The Street: West Kingsdown

A semi-rural village. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, highest spot in Kent! Our infamous neighbour of Brands Hatch is a haven for motor sport enthusiasts!! Everyone moans in the village about the noise from Brands Hatch - but 99% of the properties were built before the motor circuit. And I'd like to know how many of the people who complain take their 2 free annual passes (worth about 400) from Brands Hatch every year.

All in all West Kingsdown is still a friendly and warm hearted community to live in!!

The Kent address has often put it behind the top Surrey towns such as Esher and Weybridge, but the top end housing stock in Sevenoaks is just as good, the train link better and the surrounding countryside much nicer.

The key attraction is that Sevenoaks has escaped the naff 'footballers wives in the suburbs' feel that has engulfed Weybridge & Esher. The high street in Sevenoaks is not filled with stars and wannabes roaring around in the latest sports cars with music blaring. Sure, there are a lot of wealthy people in Sevenoaks, but they tend to be of the less 'flaunty' type.

It is still very commuter focussed, but Sevenoaks retains some of the old world charm which is missing from a lot of places now.

It retained a quaint 1950s feel right up to 2000 but now has a young loutish element due to the increase in the number of bars in the town centre.

There is much scenery, and the small high street has shops still in Tudor style on the higher floors. It is a delightful small town. There are many chain shops in the high street, as well as some local ones.

Knole Park, a beautiful national trust property, is historical and cultural. Many people walk, jog, and cycle there, as well as taking a look at the house. Also, right next to Knole Park there is a great adventure playground for small children.

Noise is minimal, and there is very little graffiti and vandalism. It's a great place for young families.

I've lived here all my life and it's been fantastic. Great for all ages kids, teenagers, middle-aged and elderly - it's got something for everyone.

Perfectly positioned for all communications - M25, main line rail to London city (less than 30 minutes) , one hour from Dover and only 25 minutes to Gatwick. Add the surrounding Kent countyside and it has everything.

Knole Park is a 1,000-acre deer park that runs alongside the town, offering beautiful walks and access to Knole House, one of the largest country houses in England.

The main advantage of living in Sevenoaks is the open countryside that surrounds it. Less than one mile from the town centre, you can be in a virtually rural environment.

Shopping facilities in Sevenoaks are fairly basic, but there are a good number of bars and restaurants in the town, and for shopping Bluewater and central London are both only 30 minutes away.

Housing stock is very varied, from small Victorian terraces in the town centre to substantial executive houses with large gardens on the outskirts.

...the shops are insufficient for the amount of people living and working in the area. There are lots of eating establishments in the town but no clubs or wine bars.

You can be in a completely rural setting within minutes and yet we are only half an hour (almost) by train to London's Charing Cross. There are many excellent private and state schools in the area including Grammar schools (selective state schools).

The town is close to the M25/M20/M26 and therefore Gatwick and Heathrow airports and the Ashford and Folkestone Eurotunnel services are within easy reach. The town itself has plenty of amenities and some bijou shops. The Bluewater Shopping Mall is only half an hour away by car and of course London is easily accessible.

The house prices are reasonable compared with the commuter belt of Surrey and South West London - a treasure.
