- the rural location, nice high street with pubs.

We have been wanting to move here for years and in 2006 we finally did!

All I will say is we have been let down by the house we bought, which was a new build from Lovell and therefore strongly recommend any brand new builds from Lovell not to be touched as they are not built to a good standard. Second hand is always better as these problems will have been rectified.

... I believe, although I haven't been able to verify this, that the reason the train service is so good is because when the land was sold to British Rail by a land-owning family at the time, they sold it on the condition that every train from Portsmouth to London stopped there, which is why you can get to London in 45 minutes.

... We were looking for a place where we could enjoy a bit of the countryside, but within commuting distance to London for work.

It's a great place to live as you are never far from anything whether it be countryside walks, a trip into Guildford, or London for shopping or a good pint and meal at the local pub!

It is really pretty, with a good balance of quiet and busy. There seems to be a sense of community which was evident at the last Christmas market and carol service. It is a bit hard to meet people when you spend a lot of time commuting in and out of Haslemere and the drive seems to take longer than expected with Guildford traffic.

But it is all worth it when you are right in the countryside!

It is convenient for London and also within 45 minutes of the beach. Could do with a few more pubs as it is good for a quiet drink but if you fancy somewhere a bit livelier it would have to be Godalming or Guildford.

Shops aren't too bad, enough to survive on but could do with a few more. Has three supermarkets and a recently built sports centre. Trains are good to Portsmouth and London. Watch out for Haslemere drivers though, they are dreadful!

My friend and I, visiting from the US, didn't consider the evening complete without stopping by for a night cap. The owners, Donald and Wendy, were friendly and gracious hosts. We had so much fun with them and their regular customers. Despite the wild reputation the pub may have had in the past, we found it to be a cozy place with warm people, and still lively and fun. As a single woman, I can say that unaccompanied ladies could feel safe here. The folks here are down to earth good people. Jodie.

Waterloo is almost as close in time as if one lived in Epsom, yet the coast is a very short journey away by comparison. Haslemere is probably one of the best served rail stations in the UK, and even during the recent strikes we had one train per hour without fail.

The convenience factor was increased greatly just over a year ago when the new Tesco supermarket was opened - and it is open 24 hours a day all the week. The other shops in the town are great and the owners and staff friendly and courteous. It makes no difference in terms of price where you shop in these days of internet competition, but the human touch is irreplaceable.

We moved here in 1998, me from Sutton and my wife from Godalming. Even though Godalming is only 9 miles away, it is a world away in terms of being far more of a town than Haslemere is, and the rail service from Godalming is not as good.

If Haslemere has one failing, it is a lack of decent pubs. The Mill is excellent (actually in Shottermill) and the Red Lion in Fernhurst is at least as good. But the pubs in the town itself? We still drink in Godalming....

...with a decent range of amenities on the attractive High Street (though for major shopping you'd need to go to Guildford) and enhanced by green and leafy open spaces. London Waterloo is a convenient rail terminus and only about 45 minutes away. There are, however, few employment opportunities in Haslemere itself. It's an ideal place to raise children, but property prices are very steep at the moment.
