Hampstead Garden Suburb
The N2 side of Hampstead Garden Suburb, of more recent vintage than the original properties begun in 1907, begins east of Kingsley Way and extends north above Lyttelton Road and south to Winnington Road and The Bishop's Avenue.
The latter is home to the seriously wealthy, so short of striking oil in your back garden you might want to consider something a little less ambassadorial. If you can't quite manage ten million the rest of this side of the suburb has a good range of large detached family homes, some with nice views over Hampstead golf course, most with sizeable gardens.
The former, north of Lyttelton Road, has mainly purpose-built apartment blocks set in attractive gardens and squares. Hampstead Garden Suburb is close to the facilities of Golders Green and Hampstead Village and within easy reach of the tube stations at East Finchley and Golders Green. The older half of the suburb is in NW11.
East Finchley
As with many parts of London, Finchley was open fields until the arrival of the trains in the mid-nineteenth century but thereafter it quickly developed into a solid middle class suburb, a process which continued in the twentieth century with the arrival of the tube.
These days it remains a well-established residential area with a good stock of Victorian and Edwardian properties interspersed with new developments and some low rise council estates.
East Finchley is mainly comprised of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and purpose-built blocks. The most sought after are found in the leafy Fortis Green area, and to the north of here bordering Coldfall Wood.
The flats and smaller houses in the area are popular with singles and young professionals; the larger family homes (in the direction of Muswell Hill) attract more established middle class families-typically City professionals and the like.
East Finchley has a pleasant village atmosphere and a nice collection of local shops and restaurants as well as an attractive old style cinema. There are further cinemas at Staples Corner (Virgin) and Finchley (Warner Village) and a new Arts Centre in the offing at Tally Ho Corner.
East of the junction where the High Road meets the North Circular is a sports and leisure complex which includes a Lido and bowling alley, fitness facilities, saunas and restaurants.
Hampstead Heath lies just to the south; more immediate green space is provided by Cherry Tree Wood in East Finchley; College Farm in Church End just off Regents Park Road and two large cemeteries, St Pancras & Islington and St Marylebone.
The nearest tube is East Finchley, on the Northern line.
